CAN sensors – The future?

September 28, 2015

This is a pretty basic overview, more information can be found by following the link at the bottom.

The Controller Area Network (CAN) was originally developed by Bosch for use in the car industry, the high degree of reliability and the performance offered by CAN make it the new standard of choice.

Controller Area Network sensors benefit from their simplicity in wiring. Each sensor (or Node as it’s referred to in CAN) has its own processor and priority. This means that essentially you can wire them in any format, series, parallel, spider and they always work as the main processor knows which device a message is coming from and which is a priority (safety sensors for example).

This makes the wiring very simple as for example you can run a single cable to device one and then daisy chain them on. Either of the examples below would work.

CAN sensors normally come with Network type plugs too making them truly PLUG & PLAY!
